Life 101”Life 101 is a deep journey into one's self that in the end offers hope, insight, and perseverance. Everyone has been a student and each of us has taken tests. But the assessment of one’s performance in life carries on long past school. In this series of life-size charcoal and ink portraits, Andrew wanted to depict how it feels to be judged, criticized, and measured by others, with one’s strengths and shortcomings graded along the same cold, impersonal criteria of a school assignment. This series is a joint effort between Andrew and his subject. These pieces have significant visual impact, an emotional experience furthered by the critical— and sometimes comical— comments etched on each piece. Before embarking on each drawing, Andrew interviews the subjects to get an honest, personal assessment of what they believe to be their strengths and shortcomings. The subject is asked the question - what is your life grade? Think about that for a second, it's not easy to answer. It usually takes time for the subject to give an honest, overall life grade. Andrew then has a counseling / interview / interrogation session with the subject to get a personal assessment of what they believe to be their strengths and shortcomings. The comments and summary that follow are from the perspective of a teacher that is grading a test. The test is life. Welcome to life 101.
